저자소개

최경란 교수는 서울대학교 디자인학과(학사)를 졸업하고 같은 대학교 미술대학원(석사)을 졸업하였다. 그 후 미국의 캘리포니아대학(UCLA)대학원을 졸업, 일리노이공과 대학(IIT) 박사를 수료하였다. 1999년 국제가구디자인심포지엄

‘Design & Cultural Identity’ 개최를 시작으로 동양문화디자인에 대한 연구의 필요성을 절감하여 2008년 동양문화디자인 연구소를 설립하였다. 2009년 동양문화 가치와 디자인적 실천‘The Value of Oriental Culture & Design Practices’를 주제로 국제컨퍼런스를 개최하였으며 이듬해 2010년 서울디자인한마당 총감독으로 재임하여 디자인서울국제컨퍼런스

모두를 위한 디자인 ‘Design for All’을 개최했다. 현재 최경란 교수는 국내외 산업체의 자문 위원 및 디자인 기획과 개발 컨설팅을 통하여 동양문화와 디자인을 연구하며 실천하고 있는 디자이너이며 국민대학교 실내디자인학과 교수이자

동양문화디자인연구소 소장직을 맡고 있다.

소반(小盤)은 절재 속에서 화려함을 보여주는 대표적인 디자인이다.

소반은 좌식생활을 하는 우리의 주거환경에 맞추어 발달한 식탁인 동시에 음식을 그릇에 담아 나르는 운반 기능을 겸한 생활용구로 음식을 먹기 위해 식기를 받치는 좌식 식탁의 총칭이다.

소반에 대해 필자는 애착이 남다르다. 소반은 단순히 음식을 담고 나르는 도구가 아니라 이를 통해 예를 익히고 격을 갖추며 정을 나눌 수 있는 생활의 의미를 담아내는 도구인 것이다.

사용하는 사람의 의도에 따라 그 기능을 달리했던 우리의 공간문화와 마찬가지로 소반이 놓이는 곳이 곧 일상생활의 식 공간이며 손님을 접대하는 접객공간이었다. 오늘날 주거환경은 서구화된 주거구조의 도입과 함께

한식과 양식이 혼용된 주거문화로 점차 변모하게 되었다. 이와 같은 입 좌식이 병행되는 생활문화로 인하여 서구의 생활가구와 전통 좌식가구가 함께 쓰이게 되면서 독특한 생활문화가 정착된 것이다. 이러한 변화에도 불구하고 소반은 여전히 사용하는 사람의 취향과 생활습관에 따라 다양한 용도로 변화를 꾀하면 삶을 동반하고 있다. 이러한 소반을 통해 우리는 전통디자인이 지닌 고유한 생활문화적 가치를 찾아볼 수 있을 것이다.

이 책은 모던디자인의 홍수 속에서 한국적 감수성을 기초로 한국디자인의

새로운 가능성과 방향을 제시해 보고자 전통 소반과 함께 세계적인 10인의 디자이너가 현대생활양식에 맞게 재해석한 소반 작품들을 함께 담고 있다.

본 저자는 이러한 의미 있는 작은 움직임이 파장을 이루어 한국전통문화에 기반한 디자인이 세계인들의 생활문화 속에 정착하길 기대해 본다.

About the Author

Kyung Ran Choi graduated from Seoul National University with a BFA and MFA in design. She later received her MFA from the University of California in Los Angeles (UCLA) in the US and completed her PhD coursework at the Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) Institute of Design.

After first identifying the need for research around oriental culture and design starting in 1999 at the opening of the International Furniture Design Symposium “Design and Cultural Identity”, she founded the Oriental Culture and Design Center (OCDC) in 2008.

In 2009, OCDC held the international conference “The Value of Oriental Culture and Design”and the following year, the Design Seoul International Conference with the theme “Design for All” was held during her term as the General Director of the 2010 Seoul Design Fair.

Currently, she carries out design research related to East Asian culture and design through her involvement with design development and consultation serving on the advisory committee of several Korean corporations. In addition, she is a professor of interior design at Kookmin University and the Executive Director of the Oriental Culture and Design Center

Introduction

The design of soban (small portable dining table) epitomizes grandeur within moderation.

Soban is not only a table developed to suit the lifestyle of Koreans who mostly sit on the floor at home but refers to any tables used as a means of delivering food on which plates are placed and food is served.

It is with a special affection and attachment to soban that I have chosen to explore this topic. For, it is not merely an instrument used to serve and transport food but it is also used to teach etiquette, pay respect to others and share compassion among users.

Resembling the Korean culture where one space serves different functions according to the user’s intentions, the place where soban was placed was the space for eating in everyday life and the space for serving guests. Since the introduction of westernized housing structures, our present day living spaces have evolved into a combination of both Korean and western living styles. Since people sit both on chairs and on the floor, western style furniture and traditional furniture are used together and this has resulted in a unique culture. Despite these changes, the soban is still a part of our lives although its purpose has been dynamically altered according to user tastes and living patterns. Through the close examination of soban, we are able to discover the unique cultural values of Korean traditional design.

In an effort to propose new possibilities and directions for Korean design based on tradition amidst the inundation of modern design, this book introduces the traditional soban along with contemporary interpretations by ten world-renowned designers who designed their own version of a soban which incorporates ideas of modern living.

It is my hope that such meaningful small steps will help design based on traditional Korean culture become a part of everyday life for people around the world.
